January

Things to do:

  • Protect vulnerable plants from bad weather such as frosts

  • Cut off Helleborus niger leaves to reveal flower and prevent hellebore black spot disease.

  • Hoe off any germinating weeds in milder conditions

  • If soils are dry enough and not frozen now is a great time to dig over borders for the spring.

  • Take hardwood cuttings from deciduous trees and shrubs to propagate.

  • Plant deciduous bare root hedging

  • Plant bareroot trees and shrubs including Roses

  • Sow summer bedding in greenhouses

  • Winter pruning of trees (Dead, Diseased, Crossing)

  • Regenerative pruning of specific shrubs (non spring flowering)

  • Watch for any storm damage on trees and shrubs
